Wirksworth, St Mary

Wirksworth, St Mary

St. Mary's is a large, prominent church in the centre of the fascinating town of Wirksworth. The building is largely 13th or 14th century, with Victorian improvements by Gilbert Scott. There is some important Saxon sculpture to be seen. Visitors will find information booklets, in several languages, treasure trails for children, and useful guide books, all in a wonderfully peaceful space.

The annual Well Dressing takes place late May Bank Holiday.  Music concerts are held throughout the year

The annual Wirksworth Arts Festival (September) sprang out of the celebration of the church's patronal festival . The traditional 'clypping' service on that day involves the congregation joining hands around the church to embrace or 'clypp' it.
